Widower settles case over wife's insect bite death

The husband of Mandy Weaver, who died in 2018 after an insect bite became infected, has settled a case with clinicians.

  • Mandy Weaver, 48, died in October 2018, more than a year after an insect bite on her leg.
  • Her husband, Mark Weaver, settled a clinical negligence claim against some clinicians from Westfield Road Surgery.
  • The settlement was reached without any admission of liability or an apology from the clinicians.

Mark Weaver, 54, has settled a case with clinicians following the death of his wife, Mandy Weaver, in October 2018. Mrs Weaver, from Winnersh, died aged 48, more than a year after an insect bite on her leg in summer 2017 became infected.

Mr Weaver said his wife had repeatedly attended the Westfield Road Surgery in Winnersh as her condition deteriorated. A law firm assisting Mr Weaver confirmed the clinical negligence claim against some of the surgery's clinicians has been settled, but without any admission of liability or an apology.

Mandy Weaver's wound began to leak and ooze within weeks of the bite. Her husband stated that she attended the surgery, where a nurse diagnosed an infection, dressed her leg, and prescribed antibiotics. Despite periods of improvement, the wound never fully healed, and both legs later became infected.

A coroner concluded that Mrs Weaver died after deep vein thrombosis caused a pulmonary embolism. Solicitors representing Mr Weaver stated that Mandy likely developed DVT due to her chronic infection and immobility, and that earlier treatment might have prevented her death.
