Luton Borough Council has developed an action plan aimed at encouraging more people to visit the town centre during the evening. This initiative follows concerns from some residents and businesses regarding the town's reputation for safety.
Karl Brown, manager of The Bear Club music venue, stated that Luton has a "certain reputation" which he believes deters visitors. However, he expressed optimism about the town's future, drawing parallels with Belfast's transformation.
The council has responded by increasing the number of enforcement officers on patrol and is trialling an SOS bus for 32 nights, offering first aid and support. James Taylor, who previously held the regeneration portfolio, noted that while crime statistics do not show "massive spikes," there is a clear "perception" issue regarding safety.
In addition to safety, customers and businesses are seeking a more active environment. Nikhil Shukla, who manages the Red Lion pub, highlighted the positive impact of events like Market Hill Live, suggesting a need for more such initiatives. The Task and Finish Group, established in 2024 by the council, has recommended streamlining the process for organising events.
