A man has been jailed for more than six years after throwing a petrol bomb at a house in Rotherham. Jamal Usman, 23, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to six years and four months at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 25 November 2023 at a property on Warwick Street, Moorgate. Seven people were inside the house at the time, including two children and an 11-month-old baby.
South Yorkshire Police stated that six occupants managed to escape unharmed, while one person suffered serious leg injuries after jumping from a window. CCTV footage showed a group, including Usman, arriving by taxi before the attack.
Detective Sergeant Chris Byne described it as "frankly a miracle that no lives were lost." He added that Usman would serve an additional three years on licence following his release. Police are still seeking two other individuals in connection with the offence.
