Hollywood actor Matt Damon has revealed his keen interest in revisiting the popular Jason Bourne film series, stating that he and the creative team are actively searching for new narrative concepts. Damon, who first captivated audiences as the amnesiac assassin in 2002's 'The Bourne Identity', has expressed a desire to add another chapter to the action-thriller franchise.
Damon's portrayal of Jason Bourne spanned three initial films – 'The Bourne Identity', 'The Bourne Supremacy', and 'The Bourne Ultimatum' – before Jeremy Renner took on a different lead role in 2012's 'The Bourne Legacy'. Damon subsequently reprised his iconic role in 2016 for the film 'Jason Bourne'. Speaking in a recent interview, he highlighted the enduring affection for the series among those involved, stating, "We’re always looking to try to get another one of those because we loved it, everyone who worked on them. So there’s always some attempt going on to write, to come up with a new story."
Speculation about a potential new Bourne film last emerged in 2023, with reports suggesting that Edward Berger, the acclaimed director behind 'All Quiet On The Western Front', was in discussions to helm a new instalment. Damon confirmed these reports the following year, reaffirming his enthusiasm for returning to the character if a compelling story could be developed.
Currently, Damon is preparing for the release of one of the year's most anticipated films, Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'. In this epic, he takes on the lead role of Odysseus, a soldier embarking on a challenging journey home after a brutal conflict. The film is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on July 17th.
Co-star Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Helen of Troy in 'The Odyssey', recently addressed the racist backlash she has faced regarding her casting. She voiced her support for director Christopher Nolan's vision, noting that the film's cast reflects a diverse global representation. Nyong'o emphasised that such criticism would persist regardless of her engagement with it.
The potential return of Damon to the Bourne universe would undoubtedly excite fans of the franchise, which has garnered significant critical and commercial success over two decades. The films are known for their gritty realism, complex plots, and innovative action sequences, contributing significantly to the modern spy thriller genre.
