The heavy metal showdown at Hampden Park on 25th June has just taken a major hit - literally! Metallica fans were gearing up to rock out with their cans in hand, but Glasgow City Council's licensing board has slammed the brakes on the plan to serve canned beer. The Police Scotland veto, backed by concerns over public safety, has seen off the trial initiative aimed at serving open cans.
The proposal, put forward by Sodexo Limited, would have seen fans restricted to sipping from cans in specific seated areas and four designated bars within the stadium - all part of a bid to reduce queuing times and plastic waste. Lawyer Stephen McGowan insisted that this was a 'prudent, proportionate proposal' tailored for Glasgow, with even Police Scotland acknowledging Sodexo's willingness to adhere to recommendations on banning 500ml cans and ceasing sales if issues arose.
But chief constable concerns over the potential for cans to be used as projectiles proved too much, and the council's licensing board ultimately ruled against the plan. 'It's not a case of being heavy-handed,' said one insider. 'The reality is that metal cans can cause serious harm if used as missiles - it's just not worth the risk.'
With this proposal canned (sorry!), fans will be sipping from plastic cups instead, sticking to traditional venue practice. While Sodexo argued for efficiency and environmental benefits, Glasgow City Council has prioritised safety above all else in a decision that's sure to spark debate among Metallica enthusiasts.
