TV presenter Nick Knowles has invested in the Cornish Pirates, a Championship rugby club based in Penzance, and believes the team is capable of becoming a sustainable Premiership club. Knowles, known for shows like DIY SOS, joined a group of new investors earlier this month.
Other investors include American firm Stonewood Capital Management, which took a stake in May. A consortium of local businessmen acquired the club from long-serving owner Dick Evans in January 2025.
Knowles stated to BBC Radio Cornwall that there are ongoing discussions with the RFU regarding the Premiership. He believes the sport's heritage in Cornwall provides a strong foundation for a top-flight team. The club has a 10-year plan to reach the top of the Championship and prepare for the Premiership.
Under new rules introduced last season, automatic promotion for Championship winners no longer exists. Clubs must demonstrate to rugby authorities that they possess a suitable business plan and infrastructure to support a Premiership side. Knowles suggests that a top-flight team would benefit the entire county, potentially boosting the local economy through increased tourism.
