Jack Whaley has earned a place in the Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) team for the Walker Cup, following his victory in the US Amateur Championship two days prior. Whaley, 22, became only the third Englishman since 1911 to win the trophy, defeating American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 in the final held at Merion, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.
Whaley is one of four new faces in the 10-man GB&I squad, alongside Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook, and Josh Hill. Luke Poulter, son of Ryder Cup player Ian Poulter, also features in the squad for a second consecutive time.
Dean Robertson, 56, will captain the GB&I team for the third time. He previously led the team in 2025 and guided them to victory in The St Andrews Trophy last month. Robertson expressed his excitement for the team, highlighting a blend of experienced and new players who have performed well in amateur golf.
The Walker Cup, a biennial match between leading amateurs from GB&I and the US, has moved to an even-year cycle, with this edition being the first. GB&I will aim to win the trophy for the first time since 2015 when the match takes place at Lahinch on the County Clare coast in western Ireland on 5 and 6 September. The US currently leads the overall series 40-9, with one halved match, after winning the 50th staging in 2025.
