Northern Ireland stands alone in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League as the only team yet to concede a goal. This impressive defensive record comes after Switzerland equalised against Slovakia on Saturday, leaving Michael O'Neill's side as the last remaining team with an unblemished defensive sheet.
Returning to the second tier of the competition, Northern Ireland has secured three consecutive clean sheets. They achieved victories against Georgia and Ukraine without conceding, alongside a scoreless draw against Hungary during the current international window.
Manager Michael O'Neill praised the team's defensive efforts, stating that the low 'Expected Goals' (xG) for opposition teams indicates a strong defensive structure. He also noted that their young defenders are coping well at this level and that the team defends effectively as a unit.
O'Neill also addressed what he perceives as a "snobbery" regarding his team's style of play, which has been described by some as direct or physical. He highlighted that controlling the game without the ball is possible and cited their second goal against Ukraine as an example of the quality football his side can produce.
Defender Trai Hume added that the team's consistent system over the past three or four years has led to players understanding their roles better, making the game easier and allowing them to express themselves.
