Spectators at sporting events across the UK and Europe were treated to a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, with the sky taking on an unusual darkness. The Moon obscured over 90 per cent of the Sun, leaving a slim crescent of light visible.
Cricket fans at Edgbaston, watching Birmingham Phoenix face MI London in The Hundred, observed the spectacle, with many wearing special glasses. This eclipse was the fullest above British skies since the total eclipse in 1999.
In Birmingham, floodlights were turned on in anticipation at the European Athletics Championships. Small groups, including Swedish athletes Erika Warff and Tilde Bjerager, gathered outside Alexander Stadium to observe the phenomenon, though clouds obscured the peak at around 7:15 pm. In Salzburg, football fans attending the UEFA Super Cup between Aston Villa and Paris St Germain also gazed skywards, with the eclipse occurring approximately half an hour before kick-off.
