A convicted people smuggler, Twana Jamal Khdir, has been arrested and charged with immigration offences. Mr Khdir, an Iraqi national, was found to be living in Leicestershire.
He was arrested on Tuesday near Uppingham in an operation led by the Midlands Criminal Financial Investigations team, supported by Leicestershire Police. Mr Khdir appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to entering the UK without valid entry clearance. He pleaded not guilty to seeking to obtain leave to enter or remain by deceptive means.
Mr Khdir has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear next at Leicester Crown Court on 5 October.
