South Wales Police are patrolling riverside paths in Cardiff after reports of attacks by youths wearing balaclavas. Pedestrians and cyclists have reportedly been targeted on the Taff Trail in Hailey Park, Gabalfa, and Llandaff.
Concerned parents have stated their children have been attacked while riding bikes on the trail since June. Inspector Tim Ursell confirmed that a youth was arrested on the Taff Trail a couple of weeks ago after allegedly attempting to assault two plain-clothed officers.
Following an attempted robbery report on 23 July near Sophia Gardens, a 13-year-old from Old St Mellons was arrested. An 11-year-old from Penylan was also arrested after a plain clothes patrol. Both boys have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
South Wales Police has increased its policing response, including high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols, which will continue throughout the summer. Cardiff Council supports these operations and plans to increase the frequency and visibility of park ranger patrols in affected areas of the Taff Trail.
