A blaze that has devastated heathland in Suffolk is now considered "stable" on its fourth day, though fire crews are still working to tackle hotspots. The fire, which began around 17:00 BST on Wednesday, affected RSPB Minsmere and Dunwich Heath, engulfing 371 acres (150 hectares).
Wildlife habitats for some of the UK's rarest species have been destroyed. The National Trust, which manages Dunwich Heath, has launched a fundraising appeal to help the habitats "recover and thrive in a changing climate."
A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson stated that firefighting operations are ongoing and roads and footpaths in the area remain closed. No injuries have been reported, and a relief centre was set up at Westleton Village Hall for affected residents and holidaymakers.
The RSPB has indicated that recovery will be a long process, with one area manager stating it could take some habitats 25 years to recover. Konik, Dartmoor, and Exmoor ponies at RSPB Minsmere are reported to be safe and cared for.
