The direct ferry service between Poole and Cherbourg, Normandy, operated by Brittany Ferries, has ceased operations three weeks earlier than initially planned. The final sailing took place on Monday, 12 October 2026.
The early closure was influenced by the sale of the vessel Contentin, which needed to be withdrawn from service by mid-October, and a “significant technical problem” with the Commodore Clipper's gearbox. This issue forced the early closure of the Portsmouth to Le Havre route, leading to the Barfleur being moved to cover Rosslare to Cherbourg sailings from 12 October.
Brittany Ferries has apologised to affected travellers, stating that bookings on the Poole to Cherbourg route had “already weakened” prior to the closure. Customers with tickets for the latter half of October have been offered alternative travel from Portsmouth or a full refund.
The company's CEO, Christophe Mathieu, noted that the Rosslare/Cherbourg route has become strategically significant for Brittany Ferries, carrying nearly 25 per cent of all freight traffic, necessitating a prioritisation of resources.
