New research commissioned by Minerva Virtual Academy has highlighted the significant financial impact of school refusal on UK families. A survey of 2,000 parents dealing with emotionally based school avoidance found that 42% estimated their household had lost up to £10,000 in income.
The study also revealed a notable impact on fathers, with over a third reducing their working hours and nearly one in three leaving work entirely to support their child at home.
School refusal is often linked to complex factors such as autism, ADHD, bullying, and unmet additional needs. The research indicated that 15% of parents are currently waiting for a formal diagnosis for their child, while 14% have faced waits exceeding two years.
During these waiting periods, 28% of affected parents reported that weekday mornings have become the most distressing part of family life. The emotional toll is also severe, with 21% of mothers experiencing a severe deterioration in their mental health and almost a quarter of parents reporting physical stress symptoms.
Almost 90% of families stated they had not received clear guidance on alternative education options, and over one in five felt they had nowhere to turn for practical advice.
