Rugby league icon Kevin Sinfield has been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, primarily in recognition of his extraordinary fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease (MND charities. Sinfield, a former England captain, has raised millions of pounds following his close friend and former Leeds Rhinos teammate Rob Burrow's diagnosis with MND in 2019.
Alongside Sinfield, celebrated children's authors Malorie Blackman and Julia Donaldson have been made dames for their significant contributions to literature. Blackman, known for her acclaimed 'Noughts & Crosses' series, and Donaldson, creator of the beloved 'Gruffalo' books, have both seen their works adapted for screen, captivating audiences across generations.
The honours list also celebrates a host of sporting figures, including several members of the victorious Lionesses squad from Euro 2022. Chloe Kelly, whose penalty secured the tournament win, is among those appointed MBEs, alongside teammates Michelle Agyemang, Jess Carter, Hannah Hampton, Lauren James, and Alessia Russo. Other notable sports personalities recognised include golfer Luke Donald and rugby union star Emily Scarratt, both receiving OBEs. Donald has successfully captained Europe to two consecutive Ryder Cup victories, while Scarratt, the Red Roses' record points scorer, retired last autumn after a distinguished career.
Beyond sport and literature, the King's Birthday Honours acknowledge a wide array of individuals across various fields. The founders of the renowned animation studio Aardman Animations, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, responsible for classics like 'Wallace & Gromit' and 'Chicken Run', have also been knighted. The list additionally highlights the crucial work of community leaders, with Deborah Lewis and Constance McCready, who established support groups for families affected by the pandemic, receiving MBEs for their invaluable service.
Sir Kevin's fundraising endeavours have been particularly poignant, raising over £11 million through a series of challenging marathons and endurance events. His dedication intensified after Rob Burrow's diagnosis, culminating in a deeply moving moment in 2023 when he pushed Burrow in a wheelchair during a marathon, carrying him over the finish line. Burrow sadly passed away a year later. Sir Kevin expressed his profound honour, stating, "I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive this award on behalf of the rugby and MND communities." Lindsey Burrow, Rob Burrow's widow, acknowledged Sir Kevin's unwavering commitment, noting, "It means so much to so many people to have a champion like Kevin in their corner."
