Stephen Fleming is expected to be named as England's Test coach, following a series of interviews with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the past two weeks. The 53-year-old New Zealander would take over from his compatriot Brendon McCullum, who will continue to lead the white-ball teams.
Fleming recently stepped down as head coach for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, as well as their subsidiary teams, earlier this month. This announcement came shortly after McCullum was sacked by the ECB as Test coach.
It is anticipated that Fleming will be in position for the tour of South Africa, which is scheduled to begin in December. However, an interim coach, likely Marcus Trescothick, may oversee the three-Test series against Pakistan starting on 19 August.
Fleming brings extensive experience in English cricket, having played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, and also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred for two years until 2024. His relationship with McCullum, described as "very good friends" and business associates, reportedly gave him an advantage over other candidates for the role.
