Samira, a 33-year-old Sudanese refugee, has been displaced seven times since the civil war first reached her village in 2003, when she was 10 years old. She now resides in Korsi refugee camp in the Central African Republic, having fled conflicts across Sudan and beyond its borders.
In April 2023, during renewed conflict in Sudan, armed men reportedly killed Samira's husband and two daughters at their home in El Geneina, West Darfur. She subsequently fled to Nyala, where an artillery strike on her temporary shelter resulted in the loss of her right arm and an eye.
Samira now sells rice and spices in the Korsi camp market, some from her monthly World Food Programme ration and some bought for resale. Her eldest son left the camp a month ago, attempting to reach Europe via a migrant trail, and she has not heard from him since.
