New South Wales police are investigating the death of a man shot in a home in Sydney's west as a potential case of mistaken identity. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting at a property in Merrylands West at approximately 3.15pm, where a man believed to be in his 30s sustained a gunshot wound.
Paramedics treated the victim, who is yet to be formally identified, but he died at the scene. Police stated that while the property was known to them for organised crime, the victim had no known links to such activity.
Supt Simon Glasser said it was unclear what the man was doing at the location or his connection to the residents, adding there is a possibility the wrong person was shot. This incident marks the second fatal shooting in Sydney this week, following the death of 23-year-old Marco Tapia in Glen Alpine on 1 September 2026, which police are also investigating as a case of mistaken identity.
