The Sydney Marathon returns on Sunday 30 August with a record-breaking 41,000 runners taking to the course for the seventh World Marathon Major of the year.

Last year’s champions both broke the course record, with Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros winning in 2:06:06 and Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan triumphing in 2:18:22.

Both reigning world champions Alphonce Simbu and Peres Jepchirchir are in the elite line-up, while Ethiopia’s former Boston and London Marathon winner Sisay Lemma headlines the men’s field and compatriot Hagos Gebrhiwet makes his debut over the distance.

Olympic champion Jepchirchir will be the favourite in the women’s field, with compatriot Irine Cheptai, Tanzania’s Magdalena Shauri and multiple world champion Vivian Cheruiyot among the other star names.

The route begins on Miller Street in North Sydney, crosses the Harbour Bridge and finishes by the Sydney Opera House. Wheelchair events start at 6.15am local time (9.15pm BST on Saturday), with the elite races at 6.30am (9.30pm BST on Saturday) and mass participation rolling from 6.32am.

UK viewers can watch on TNT Sports and TNT Sports 3, with coverage beginning at 9pm BST.

Why this matters: The Sydney Marathon is one of the World Marathon Majors, and this year's record entry and elite fields underline its growing status in global distance running.

What this means for you: UK viewers can watch the marathon live on TNT Sports and TNT Sports 3 from 9pm BST on Saturday evening.
