The Sydney Swans AFL club has stated it will sanction players for a "serious breach" of expected club behaviour and standards, following an incident that led to a report of sexual assault. The club's board is scheduled to meet on Tuesday night to determine penalties.
Victorian police confirmed on Tuesday that the sexual crimes squad is investigating a reported sexual assault at Melbourne's Pullman Hotel in the early hours of Monday morning. No arrests have been made and no charges have been laid in relation to the police investigation.
The Swans said their actions regarding club sanctions would be independent of the ongoing police investigation. Further sanctions or decisions related to police findings would be considered once the investigation concludes.
Andrew Dillon, the AFL's chief executive, described the allegations as "deeply concerning" and stated the league is prepared to act. He also called for respect for the privacy of the woman who made the report to police.
The club has not named the players involved but said it would provide appropriate support to players, their partners, and families. The Swans also stated they condemn all forms of abuse and disrespectful behaviour towards women.
