Troy Aikman, a longtime Monday Night Football announcer, has announced he is looking for his "next landing spot" as his ESPN contract is due to expire after February's Super Bowl. Aikman confirmed in a radio interview on Thursday morning that he will broadcast through this season and then become a free agent.
The Hall of Fame quarterback is in the final year of a five-year deal with ESPN, reportedly paying him $18m annually. His broadcast partner, Joe Buck, recently finalised a six-year extension with ESPN, reportedly worth over $100m, which runs through the network's next Super Bowl broadcast in 2031.
Aikman appeared to confirm reports of tension with Buck regarding their contract situations, stating, "There's probably a time and a place for all that to be discussed." He added, "I'm looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold, with the Super Bowl and all that, and where my next landing spot might be."
