U2 have shared their cover of The Pogues’ 1989 track ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’, recorded for an upcoming tribute album dedicated to Shane MacGowan. The album, titled '20th Century Paddy – The Songs Of Shane MacGowan', is due for release on November 13.
The tribute album was first announced in March and will feature a range of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Depp, The Libertines, Tom Waits, and Primal Scream. It will be available digitally and as a limited edition physical release, which includes 3LPs, 2CDs, a 56-page book of memorabilia, and liner notes.
Previous tasters from the record include Bruce Springsteen's reimagined version of 'A Rainy Night In Soho' and Dropkick Murphys' cover of 'The Body Of An American'. Other artists set to feature on the album include Hozier, David Gray, The Jesus And Mary Chain, and Kate Moss.
U2 guitarist The Edge commented on MacGowan, stating he “was full of contradictions — and that’s where the truth of him lived.” He added that MacGowan found a voice that felt “both ancient and completely of its time.”
Victoria Mary Clarke, MacGowan’s wife and the project's driving force, said that “Shane’s spirit and songwriting are eternally exalted through this glorious collection.” Half of all artist royalties from the album will be donated to Dublin Simon Community to provide housing and healthcare for those experiencing homelessness.
