The UK is preparing for the launch of its first dedicated permanent mobile museum, an initiative designed to broaden access to arts and culture across the nation. A total investment of £1.6 million, comprising £800,000 from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and a matching £800,000 from the arts access charity Art Explora, will fund the creation of this state-of-the-art vehicle.
Renowned British architecture studio Ab Rogers Design has been appointed to design the mobile museum following an international competition. From 2027, Art Explora will operate the new museum, delivering three 12-week exhibitions annually. One exhibition each year will feature artworks from the Government Art Collection (GAC), with the remaining programme delivered by national and regional partners such as Tate, the National Portrait Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Birmingham Museums Trust, and National Museums Liverpool, ensuring wide geographical reach.
The Government Art Collection, established in 1899, comprises a national collection of British art displayed in government buildings both in the UK and internationally. These works are viewed by hundreds of thousands of people annually, serving to promote British art and contribute to cultural diplomacy. The GAC also runs extensive public engagement programmes, supporting creative exchange and skill development for young people in communities.
Ahead of the permanent mobile museum's launch, a three-month pilot tour will take place this summer in the South West and North West of England. Utilising an existing mobile museum, this pilot will bring a curated selection of works from the GAC to various communities, many of whom may not have had previous opportunities to experience a national gallery firsthand. The pilot exhibition will explore the sea's profound influence on people, places, and communities through themes of exploration, migration, and climate change.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, emphasised the government's commitment to making art accessible to everyone, regardless of their location. She stated that the Government Art Collection belongs to the entire country and that this tour represents a significant step towards achieving that goal. By bringing the collection directly to communities, including parks, schools, libraries, and public squares, the initiative aims to dismantle barriers preventing people from experiencing the art that is collectively owned.
This initiative builds on the success of two previous mobile museum tours conducted by Art Explora in collaboration with Tate across the Midlands and the North in 2023 and 2024. The new mobile museum is currently under construction in Telford by Torton Bodies Limited, a leading UK firm.
