Amaher Nour, the wife of Ahmed Al-Doush, a British business analyst from Manchester, has appealed for his release from a Saudi Arabian jail. Mr Al-Doush has been detained since August 2024, reportedly over social media posts.
Amnesty International, which is campaigning for his release, states he was convicted in an unfair trial on charges violating his right to freedom of expression. His legal team in the UK has not been allowed to see legal papers related to his case, including the judgment.
Mr Al-Doush was sentenced in May 2025 to 10 years in jail by Saudi Arabia's Specialised Criminal Court, reportedly for using social media to spread fake news against the government. This sentence was reduced to five years on appeal in April.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded in March that his detention was arbitrary under international law and called for his release. His wife has appealed directly to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for clemency on humanitarian grounds, citing his deteriorating physical and mental health.
