Classic children's literary characters Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger are the latest stars to appear on a new series of Royal Mint 50p coins, celebrating the enduring theme of friendship. The coins, which went on sale this week, feature original illustrations inspired by E.H. Shepard's iconic drawings from A.A. Milne's much-loved stories.
The Royal Mint said the collection was designed to capture the unique bond between the characters, with each coin showcasing a different member of the Hundred Acre Wood. Piglet is shown clutching a balloon, Eeyore stands beside his trademark thistles, Tigger bounces joyfully, and Winnie-the-Pooh holds a honey pot. The coins are legal tender and can be used as currency, though collectors are expected to keep them as keepsakes.
This is not the first time the Royal Mint has turned to children's literature for inspiration. Previous collections have featured Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, Paddington Bear, and the Gruffalo. The Winnie-the-Pooh series joins a long tradition of commemorative coins that tap into British cultural nostalgia, often proving popular with both serious collectors and casual buyers.
The coins are available in several finishes, including Brilliant Uncirculated, silver proof, and gold proof editions, with prices starting from £11 for the base version. The Royal Mint has also produced a special set containing all four coins in a presentation pack. Demand is expected to be high, particularly among fans of the original stories and those who grew up with the Disney animated adaptations.
For UK collectors, the coins can be ordered directly from the Royal Mint's website. While the characters are also widely available on BBC iPlayer and Disney+ in various animated series and films, the coins offer a tangible piece of literary heritage. The Royal Mint has not confirmed whether further characters, such as Owl or Rabbit, will be added to the series in future.
